Elon Musk’s 6 priorities for Twitter 2.0

In a tweet published on November 27, the billionaire reveals his priorities for the Twitter of tomorrow, which he names: Twitter 2.0 The Everything App. Elon Musk’s end goal appears to be to turn Twitter into a super app à la WeChat, an application that offers multiple services including the possibility of carrying out financial transactions.

Here are the 6 features highlighted by Elon Musk for Twitter 2.0:

  1. Advertising as entertainment: it would be to offer a more engaging advertising experience. For example, users would be encouraged to like a sponsored tweet to receive a “reward” in return. Little information about it at this point, but it could be a new advertising format.
  2. The video format: Elon Musk wants to develop the video format because he wants to attract more creators to his platform, but above all to develop the monetization of their content. In addition, video has become an essential format for brands.
  3. End-to-end encrypted private messages: direct messages (DM) should be end-to-end encrypted with the same protocol as the Signal appaccording to the latest research by Jane Manchun Wong.
  4. Tweets with a long format: the idea is to be able to publish a simple tweet by attaching a long text (Notes) to it so as not to see this common practice of publishing a screenshot of a text. This function would natively integrate messages of up to 2,500 words.
  5. The relaunch of the Twitter Blue subscription: the idea is to relaunch his Twitter Blue subscription at $7.99 per month which allows him to obtain the famous blue tick, which would allow him to generate more income for the platform. For now, the new Twitter Blue has been suspended but could be relaunched this Friday.
  6. Payments : no visual for this feature, but if it will be possible to make payments directly on Twitter, and this will confirm Elon Musk’s ambition to transform Twitter into super app.

Twitter is hiring again

Elon Musk also announces that Twitter is hiring new staff after laying off more than half of the workforce when he took over as CEO. To justify these recruitments, the billionaire presents slides which demonstrate in particular an increase in registrations and active users since his takeover of the platform. This seems surprising when you know that many users have already turned to alternatives to Twitter such as Mastodon for example.

Gold and gray verification badges on Friday?

Another important information disclosed by Elon Musk in a tweet: a new badge system should appear on Friday, December 2. The idea being to clarify the situation on authenticated accounts after a failure to launch the new Twitter Blue. This subscription made it possible to obtain the blue tick but was the beginning of drifts on the usurpation of accounts.

There should therefore be 3 types of badge:

  • A gold badge: for companies
  • A gray badge: for government authorities
  • A blue badge: for individuals
