Entrepreneur Elon Musk rose to global fame as chief executive of electric car maker Tesla. He is CEO and principal designer of his space company SpaceX. And more recently he became the richest man in the world, surpassing Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, the online commerce company.
Elon Reeve Musk is born in 1971 in Pretoria, in South Africa. He attended the English private preparatory school of Waterloof House. He graduated from Pretoria Boys High School. Technology quickly became an escape for him. At age 10, Elon Musk learned to program using a Commodore VIC-20, a relatively inexpensive home computer. In no time, he became proficient enough to create Blaster, a video game in the style of Space Invaders. He sold the game’s BASIC code to PC and Office Technology magazine for $500.
At 17, Elon Musk moved to Canada. He signed up for Queen’s University at Kingston, Ontario. He then transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a degree in physics and economics. Musk got a Bachelor of Science in Physicsin addition to a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the Wharton School. He was 24 when he moved to California to pursue a doctorate in applied physics at Stanford University. But given his entrepreneurial visions, he quit the program after two days. Spotlight on what the most productive entrepreneur on the planet has accomplished, and his connection to the world of virtual reality and the metaverse.
His main accomplishments
Ambitious, passionate and determined, Elon Musk has an impressive list of accomplishments on his way to the top. And it seems to be constantly on the lookout for pioneering technologies, groundbreaking innovations and sustainable developments.
From the launch of Zip2 to X.com
In 1995, along with his brother Kimbal, Musk launched Zip2. It’s about a software company which helps the media to move into the age of the web. In 1999, Compaq Computer Corp bought Zip2 for $341 million. Musk used this sum to create X.com, a company specializing in fintech.
Then X.com merged with a money transfer company called Confinity. And the resulting company became known as PayPal. Peter Thiel ousted Musk as CEO of PayPal before eBay bought the payments company for $1.5 billion. But Musk still profited from the takeover through his 11.7% stake in PayPal.
“My after-tax earnings from PayPal were approximately $180 million said Musk in a 2018 interview.
Elon Musk becomes Tesla boss
In 2004, Elon Musk became involved in the electric car company as the first investor with a contribution of $6.3 million. He joined the team of a company known as Tesla Motors.
Following a series of disagreements, the co-founder of Tesla, Martin Eberhard was ousted from the company in 2007. An interim CEO was hired to replace him. Next, Musk took control of Tesla as CEO and product architect. Under his leadership, Tesla became one of the world’s largest automakers.
Tesla specializes in the production of electric vehicles. But he also maintains a strong presence in the solar energy fieldthanks to its acquisition of SolarCity. The company produces 2 rechargeable solar batteries. The smallest, power wall has been developed for home backup power and off-grid use. The biggest, power packis for commercial or electrical use.
The launch of space enterprise SpaceX
Musk used most of the proceeds from his PayPal stake to found Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, the rocket developer commonly referred to as SpaceX. On his own, Musk spent $100 million to found SpaceX in 2002.
Under Musk’s leadership, SpaceX stalled several high-profile contracts with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States and the US Air Force to design space launch rockets. The richest man in the world announced his intention to send an astronaut to mars by 2025 as part of a collaborative effort with NASA.
The takeover of witter
In April 2022, Elon Musk concluded a deal to buy Twitter for around $44 billion. The entrepreneur wants to take over the influential social network frequented by world leaders, celebrities and cultural trendsetters. Twitter agreed to sell itself to Musk for $54.20 per share. It would be the biggest deal to take a company private – something Mr. Musk said he would do with Twitter – in at least two decades.
” Freedom of speech is the foundation of a functioning democracy. And Twitter is the digital public square where issues vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Musk said in a statement announcing the deal.
“Twitter has enormous potential – I look forward to working with the company and the user community to unlock it.” The deal, approved unanimously by Twitter’s board of directors, is expected to close this year, subject to a vote by Twitter shareholders and certain regulatory approvals.
Elon Musk disapproves of the metaverse
Asked about his views on the ecology of the metaverse, Musk said he couldn’t see himself having a screen on his face all day. He expressed his disapproval of metaverse and web 3.0 ecosystemsdismissing them as marketing gimmicks.
“I don’t know if I necessarily buy into this metaverse stuff, even though I’m often told about it,” he explained.
Musk thinks he’s not anticipating a future in which people have to leave the physical world to live in a virtual world. He also mentioned that VR headsets could cause motion sickness when playing video games. And it was for this reason that he provided what he considered to be a far preferable option. It is the Neuralink brain implant.
Elon Musk mocks web3
The metaverse and the Web3 are two trends that are supposed to revolutionize the digital world. But in a recent interview, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla said mocked Web3. As a reminder, the web3 designates a nebulous concept in which internet services are being rebuilt around the blockchain and cryptocurrency. It’s another alternative vision for the future of the internet, with a lot of momentum driven by the idea that ordinary internet users will be able to benefit directly from their online content and activity.
Musk admitted he might be “too old” to understand these new technologies. “Am I like one of those people who considered the Internet [en] 1995 as a fashion or something that will never be worth anything? he suggested, before noting that in 1995 he was among those who understood the potential of the Internet.
Musk hasn’t spent much time discussing Web3. But he has already expressed his skepticism about the project on Twitter. He agrees with his colleague, tech CEO Jack Dorsey. According to the latter, Web3 will not democratize anything. He thinks he will simply shift power from existing incumbents to launch venture capital funds like Andreessen Horowitz.
Elon Musk and virtual reality
Elon Musk explained that microchip integration can put users in full virtual reality. He believes that this solution would make it possible to surpass metaverse project of meta with VR headsets. Musk’s brain interface technology company is called Neuralink.
This company is developing a gadget that can be implanted in the brain and used to record and stimulate brain activity. Musk claimed that this gadget was similar to a “FitBit in your skull”.
Furthermore, he suggested that Neuralink had medicinal uses. According to him, the Neuralink product will allow a paralyzed person to use a smartphone with their mind faster than one using their thumbs.
He added that later versions will be able to transfer impulses from Neuralinks into the brain to Neuralinks in groups of motor or sensory neurons in the body. This allows paraplegics to walk again. Musk pointed out that the gadget is “planted low to the skull.” It charges wirelessly, giving users a totally natural look and feel.
Do Musk’s promises of Neuralink capabilities raise high hopes?
Neuralink is dedicated to the development of a device, which, once implanted in the human brain, would allow a computer to translate a person’s thoughts into action. With this, an individual could do anything, like we do today typing, pressing buttons, or manipulating a mouse or joystick, just thinking about the desired outcome instead.
According to Elon Musk, this would also allow send information from a computer back to the brain. He claimed that in the future we will all need such brain-computer interfaces. He thinks the only way to follow the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence will be of merge with the machineslike cyborgs.
A survey published by Pew Research Centerwhich analyzes public opinion on advanced technologies, revealed that 6 in 10 Americans would consider having a computer chip surgically implanted in their brain whether they could turn the technology on or off. In fact, Americans view technology more favorably if they know they have autonomy and control over it.
The future of neurotechnology is still unclear. But we know that by 2025, technology like Neuralink will be widely available to alls. There will be more emphasis on brain-computer interfaces, which will make our brains smarter and our lives easier. When you need directions, all you have to do is think about it and the information will automatically appear before your eyes!
